Broncos’ 2009 season is a “successful failure”

When Apollo 13 launched on April 13, 1970 in attempt to reach the outskirts of space and explore the moon, the massive shuttle traversed away from Earth with its astronauts tucked safely away in hopes of exploring new boundaries and gaining a further glimpse into the reality of the unknown.

Track team achieves sky high results at AFA meet

The UCCS Track team had its second competition of the year Friday, Jan. 15 at the Air Force Academy. For some the event was about succeeding in only their first or second collegiate race; for others it was about gaining confidence and getting back into racing.

For every great game of the past residing deep within the psyche of sports fans, there exists a sports film that ran tangential to the games themselves. Volleyball: Year-round dedication

Despite a bitter sweet ending to last season, the UCCS Women’s Volleyball Team began their spring season this month in hopes of becoming another top contender in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

This weekend the UCCS women’s softball team will lace up their cleats and compete with vengeance. Facing nationally ranked competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Mountain Lions will get their first chance to fight for a win.

A winning ‘whiteout’ storms the mountain: Basketball victorious

“We came out with a spark and actually started on a good note,” exclaimed Junior Mallory Lowe after the lady Mountain Lions won their second RMAC game this season, 101-93 over the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers Friday evening at the Gallogly Events Center. Senior Captain Janean Jubic elaborated, “We added a few things to our offense, mixed it up a little, just went out there and played some hard basketball.”

Golf team sets sights on championship

The Golf Team reached a new pinnacle of success for Mountain Lion Athletics as they ended the fall portion of their season ranked No. 9 in the nation according to Golfstat Division II National Rankings. With spring play just around the corner, UCCS is currently in the lead toward claiming a fifth straight conference title and may prove to be national contenders.

Spotlight on RMAC Track High Jump Champ Steven Gomez

Sophomore Steven Gomez made UCCS sports history in February by winning the RMAC individual high jump title. In an attempt to perfect the Fosbury Flop technique – popularized by American Dick Fosbury in the 1968 Olympics – Gomez cleared 7 feet ¼ inches on Feb.

Softball notches first RMAC win

The softball team was able to find some success, despite having to play four games in two days against New Mexico Highlands on the weekend of March 6 and 7 at Mountain Lion Field. The Mountain Lions (4-9, 1-3 RMAC) finished the weekend 1-3, but managed to record their first RMAC win of the season.

Men’s and Women’s Basketball: Playoff hopes remain alive for men, women aim to finish season strong

The regular season has nearly come to a close for Mountain Lion Basketball. The men and women played their last two home games at the Gallogly Events Center over the snowy weekend of Feb. 20.

Mountain Lions on track: Looking forward to conference

On Feb. 19 the Colorado School of Mines hosted its annual Twilight Meet, a chance for local teams to get a final tune-up in before the RMAC championships.

Mountain Lions come up short against Metro State in playoff loss

The Mountain Lions headed into mid February with one goal in mind: Advance to postseason play. By winning four of their last six games, the men earned the No. 3 spot in the RMAC’s East Division with hopes of playing Colorado Mines. Unfortunately, UCCS was matched against powerhouse Metro State.

Women’s basketball: Season ends with a hopeful glimpse

Despite finishing 2-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the lady Mountain Lion’s basketball season ended Feb. 26 with glimpses of hope and possibility for the future.

Men’s 4x400 and High Jump: RMAC champs

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team took the RMAC title Feb. 27 in Golden, CO, earning UCCS Track and Field’s first conference title for a relay team, while high jumper Steven Gomez’s conference-best jump earned him a trip to the National Championships Mar. 12-13.

UCCS Golf clinched its fifth consecutive RMAC Golf Championship with a second place spring championship  nish last Tuesday in Florence, Ariz.

Women’s Softball may have finally found its groove, winning four out of its last six games and ending agrueling nine game losing streak on March 22 against Adams State.

Golf team finds success as spring play commences

The Mountain Lions began the second portion of their season on March 22 at the Notre Dame De Namur Invitational in Livermore, CA. The team shot 300 for the tournament and finished in eighth place out of the fifteen teams that competed.

Student athletes are still held accountable over summer

While many UCCS students look forward to a summer full of relaxation, UCCS student athletes still have to kick themselves into high gear.

UCCS Athletics: How scholarships are dispersed between sports

Funding the scholarship program of UCCS to the maximum level allowed by NCAA Division II guidelines would require an additional annual investment of $750,000. This would enable the school to fully fund the 74 scholarships that are allowed. As of the 2009-10 year, UCCS has provided an equivalent total of 44 scholarships, which marks just below 60 percent of the school’s maximum scholarships allowed.
