In with the new, out with the old.  While new younger coaches are Super Bowl bound, the NFL saw older more experienced coaches getting the axe.  Mike Shanahan (two titles), John Gruden (one title) were both fired. The ungrateful Broncos brought in baby-faced Josh McDaniels who has a mere 32 years of life experience.

One of the NFL’s greatest franchises, the Pittsburgh Steelers, will once again be in the Super Bowl. Pittsburgh is currently in a three-way tie with Dallas and San Francisco for most Super Bowl victories: five. The more impressive thing is that the Steelers will be led into this Super Bowl by Mike Tomlin, their third coach in franchise history.

Athlete news … just not about athletics

In keeping with the hopeful atmosphere that our country has had during this historic week, it seems appropriate to also change up the tone of this article. That means there will be no critique of Dallas Cowboys receiver, Terrell Owens “T.O.” for his narcissistic behavior that is an utter disgrace to the last name we were born to share.

predictions for 2009

Election aside, 2008 was one of the stranger years of sports in recent memory. 2009 will offer just as much intrigue, so without further ado, here are nine predictions for the upcoming sports year.

UCCS Basketball

The UCCS men’s and women’s basketball teams made amazing comebacks last Saturday night, but both teams fell short of a win in the end.

The modern steel curtain will smother cards

Super Bowl XLIII is finally here, and the participants couldn’t be more surprising to the average fan. At the beginning of the season, nobody thought these two teams would be here. However, early season predictions are almost never right because so much can happen during the course of the season. When you look at these two teams rationally, it makes sense that they are both here.

UCCS Basketball suffers

The UCCS basketball teams were on the road last weekend. Both the men and women left Denver in frustration, as their long seasons continue.

There was also a little event called the Super Bowl going on last weekend, and its lowlight was the half-time show with Bruce Springsteen. I know he is the boss and all, and even I might indulge in some Springsteen from time to time myself, but let’s get serious here.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer met in a major championship again. Nadal prevailed in a five-set battle at the Australian Open, and it was one for the ages. But the real story line is how men’s tennis has suddenly become relevant again. Nadal and Federer are at the top of their game and are definitely the two best in the game, maybe ever.

Women struggle at home

The UCCS women’s basketball team can’t like playing Nebraska-Kearney. Sooner or later the tables will have to turn, but for now the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers have UCCS’ number.    The Lopers have won 19 of the last 21 meetings between the two, and Friday night was no different.

A steel smackdown

Methodic is the right word here, as are smart, controlled and tough. All of those adjectives describe the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The Steelers opened the game with every coaches ideal drive. All week long, the coaches script out the perfect opening drive for the upcoming game, and last Sunday coach Mike Tomlin and staff had the perfect script.

A photo was released last week of Olympic hero Michael Phelps hitting a bong. The picture caused a media hail storm on the Olympic medalist. Phelps was criticized for not being a good role model and setting a bad example for kids. Spare me, please.

It was revealed that Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) tested positive for steroids in 2003. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone who has an interest in baseball. While steroid use is prevalent in almost every sport, it means the most in baseball, a game in which statistics mean everything.

Athlete news … just not about athletics

It’s about time that quitting paid off.   The New Haven Register (CT) reports that Kevin Quill, the high school swim coach who was involved in the production of team T-shirts mocking a student who had quit the boys’ swim team, was fired last Friday, school officials said.

NBA midseason analysis

Now that football season is finally over, we can all concentrate on basketball for a while. The NBA all-star game will be this weekend – the best all-star game in sports, but that’s not the source of my excitement. What really has me excited is the fact that the NBA is entering its stretch run.

UCCS men on a roll, women bounce back

The Ewing Theory potential continues to build for UCCS’ men’s basketball team. After leading scorer Nick Weaver was suspended two weeks ago, the Mountain Lions responded with two wins. The men showed that those two wins weren’t a fluke by playing two more great games last weekend.

Athlete news … just not about athletics

This past week certainly was a difficult one for Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Apparently, winning 14 gold medals (16 medals total) in his Olympic career, being named Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year in 2008, being crowned World Swimmer of the year by Swimming World Magazine in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and having numerous multi-million dollar endorsements from various corporate sponsors just couldn’t get Mr. Phelps high enough.

UCCS women split two

The UCCS women’s basketball team was due to get hot one of these days. Last Friday night, they finally warmed up by knocking down 12 three-pointers in an 87-82 victory over the Chadron State Eagles.

Men’s streak ends in Nebraska

The red hot UCCS men’s basketball team took their streak on the road to Chadron State last Friday. The Mountain Lions were able to keep the magic, extending their streak to five games by defeating the Chadron State Eagles 71-67.

All-star performances

The NBA’s all-star weekend is my favorite all-star game out of any sport, and last weekend showed why. But it pissed me off at the same time.

The NFL combine has started testing future NFL stars on their speed, agility, IQ, etc. Great. Now we get to hear about the NFL non-stop until April’s draft. ESPN’s incessant coverage of the NFL goes year round, and I don’t know about you, but I am not looking forward to the 35 mock drafts that are about to take place. Mel Kiper not only wows people with his insider knowledge, but his hair also does the trick. I am not sure if it’s even real anymore. I think ESPN just CGIs his hair in place before every telecast. It’s the off season guys, so give it a rest for a while.

College basketball is entering its stretch run, and teams are gearing up for March Madness. Once again, there hasn’t been a clear-cut favorite in the regular season. Duke and North Carolina are good once again, and both have been up to number one in the country, but they have also lost to some questionable teams. If I had to pick an early favorite, I would look at Pittsburgh or Oklahoma. Pittsburgh has a dynamite player in Sam Young who can light it up on any given night, while Oklahoma has the powerful Blake Griffin. Griffin dominates the boards and scores some points while he’s at it. Griffin went down with a concussion in Oklahoma’s recent loss to Texas, so let’s hope he’s OK. My early dark horse is Kentucky because Jodi Meeks has the skill to take games over like nobody else in the country, and he could carry them deep in the March tourney. Keep your eyes open; bracket time is just around the corner.

Society told him to “Beat It.” “Billie Jean” would not claim to be his lover even if he begged, and frankly the only “Thriller” about his existence seems to be looking at his pathetic excuse for a face. That’s right, if you haven’t guessed by now, I’m not talking about the “Man in the Mirror,” I’m talking about the man that set out on an escapade to “Heal the World.”

UCCS basketball

The Heller Center and its purpose are relatively unknown to UCCS students. Some associate its presence with ghost stories and dares that have prompted some to wander onto its mysterious property late at night. The stucco and concrete block buildings on the Center’s property really have a rich history that members of the community, along with the University, are looking to preserve.

The power of ‘King James’

While watching Lebron James destroy the Milwaukee Bucks last week, I officially stopped being a Lebron James-hater. I have never liked his game; it always seemed sloppy and unnatural to me.

Athlete news … just not about athletics

Ah yes, it certainly has been a busy week off the field in the sports world. Free agency started for the NFL, which means that many already overpaid athletes are now looking to become even more overpaid in the weeks ahead. For Denver Broncos fans, the beginning of football’s “free market” has been somewhat troublesome to say the least.

UCCS men advance to playoffs

Friday and Saturday were big home games for the Lions. The men split the weekend, beating Regis by one point on Friday, 92-91, and, despite losing on Saturday to number-one RMAC-ranked Metro State (86-76), advanced to the playoffs. Senior Frank McCollum led the weekend with 18 points each game, ending his home career games with a double-double on Friday against Regis and the most Lions points on Saturday against Metro State.

A Weekend of Sports

Sometimes you just have those compelling weekends of sports that you know you will remember years down the road. That was last weekend for me, and it might not have been an all-time weekend, but it was nonetheless event filled. Without further ado, here is my blogging account of a weekend that was, and the three moments that made it for me.

Women’s basketball ends season

Last weekend marked the end of the lady Mountain Lions season, as UCCS lost in double overtime to the Regis Rangers on Friday, 106-101, and 83-70 to the Metro State Roadrunners on Saturday. Paulina Tuell, who led both teams with 36 points on Friday, sunk a field goal with two seconds left to bring the game into overtime at 86-86.

Athletes in the News...just not about athletics

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. … Wrong – it most certainly isn’t. I must begin with a disclaimer: midterms are in the air, there is a constant bombardment of news that our country’s economy is tanking so quickly, that the whole world may end any day, and it has taken any sanity I once had. Parental advisory: Explicit news may follow.

The Denver Broncos have made a splash in free agency, signing a multitude of players. New coach Josh McDaniels is wiping out the team that Mike Shanahan built and rapidly changing its look. Key additions have been the excellent but aging Brian Dawkins, the average Jabar Gaffney, running backs Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, and J.

The end is near for Owens

Being a San Francisco 49ers fan, I have always been immersed in their franchise. Don’t get me wrong: I am a Denver Bronco fan first and foremost, but San Francisco is always number two for me. My favorite football player of all time, Jerry Rice, played there, set records there, won championships there and became the greatest wide receiver of all time there.

Athlete news … just not about athletics

I had a stark revelation that I was forced to confront head-on this past week about the news that somehow relates to athletes. I have been completely biased thus far, and for that, I must apologize. Each and every week the focal point of the news has been irrational actions and verbal atrocities committed by men – not women .

The Jay Cutler/Josh McDaniels storm keeps on getting more compelling. The two met last week, and most reports say it didn’t go over well. The conversations were mild mannered, but Cutler and McDaniels reportedly traded a few snide comments. Cutler has also reportedly put his two Denver houses up for sale and told the media that he expects to be traded by draft time.

The clocks have changed, the weather is getting better, and that means that spring is upon us. It also means that golf season is finally here and Tiger Woods is back on tour. Anytime a superstar gets injured, the sport suffers a little bit. For golf, Woods is the only superstar that really matters – that’s why his comeback has been so anticipated.

Bracket busting time

The world’s biggest tournament is upon us once again. It’s that time for buzzer beaters, upsets, breakout stars and Dick Vitale hollering. This year’s NCAA tournament should be extremely unpredictable since there was really no clear-cut favorite all season long. Only three of the top ten teams in the country made their conference championship, and the number one team in the nation has been a revolving door all season. So in light of that, I will give you my personal favorite for each region, a player to watch and a dark horse to watch. Good luck on your brackets, and let the madness begin.

Tough week for UCCS softball

Two doubleheaders resulted in three losses and one win for UCCS last week in Colorado Springs. The first doubleheader was against RMAC rival Colorado School of Mines. The first game featured a four-run rally in the sixth inning for UCCS, which was led by Jessika Anastos’ two-run homer.
