There was also a little event called the Super Bowl going on last weekend, and its lowlight was the half-time show with Bruce Springsteen. I know he is the boss and all, and even I might indulge in some Springsteen from time to time myself, but let’s get serious here.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer met in a major championship again. Nadal prevailed in a five-set battle at the Australian Open, and it was one for the ages. But the real story line is how men’s tennis has suddenly become relevant again. Nadal and Federer are at the top of their game and are definitely the two best in the game, maybe ever.
The UCCS women’s basketball team can’t like playing Nebraska-Kearney. Sooner or later the tables will have to turn, but for now the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers have UCCS’ number. The Lopers have won 19 of the last 21 meetings between the two, and Friday night was no different.
A steel smackdown
Methodic is the right word here, as are smart, controlled and tough. All of those adjectives describe the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The Steelers opened the game with every coaches ideal drive. All week long, the coaches script out the perfect opening drive for the upcoming game, and last Sunday coach Mike Tomlin and staff had the perfect script.

A photo was released last week of Olympic hero Michael Phelps hitting a bong. The picture caused a media hail storm on the Olympic medalist. Phelps was criticized for not being a good role model and setting a bad example for kids. Spare me, please.

It was revealed that Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) tested positive for steroids in 2003. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone who has an interest in baseball. While steroid use is prevalent in almost every sport, it means the most in baseball, a game in which statistics mean everything.
It’s about time that quitting paid off. The New Haven Register (CT) reports that Kevin Quill, the high school swim coach who was involved in the production of team T-shirts mocking a student who had quit the boys’ swim team, was fired last Friday, school officials said.
NBA midseason analysis
Now that football season is finally over, we can all concentrate on basketball for a while. The NBA all-star game will be this weekend – the best all-star game in sports, but that’s not the source of my excitement. What really has me excited is the fact that the NBA is entering its stretch run.
The Ewing Theory potential continues to build for UCCS’ men’s basketball team. After leading scorer Nick Weaver was suspended two weeks ago, the Mountain Lions responded with two wins. The men showed that those two wins weren’t a fluke by playing two more great games last weekend.
This past week certainly was a difficult one for Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Apparently, winning 14 gold medals (16 medals total) in his Olympic career, being named Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year in 2008, being crowned World Swimmer of the year by Swimming World Magazine in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and having numerous multi-million dollar endorsements from various corporate sponsors just couldn’t get Mr. Phelps high enough.
The UCCS women’s basketball team was due to get hot one of these days. Last Friday night, they finally warmed up by knocking down 12 three-pointers in an 87-82 victory over the Chadron State Eagles.
Men’s streak ends in Nebraska
The red hot UCCS men’s basketball team took their streak on the road to Chadron State last Friday. The Mountain Lions were able to keep the magic, extending their streak to five games by defeating the Chadron State Eagles 71-67.
All-star performances
The NBA’s all-star weekend is my favorite all-star game out of any sport, and last weekend showed why. But it pissed me off at the same time.

The NFL combine has started testing future NFL stars on their speed, agility, IQ, etc. Great. Now we get to hear about the NFL non-stop until April’s draft. ESPN’s incessant coverage of the NFL goes year round, and I don’t know about you, but I am not looking forward to the 35 mock drafts that are about to take place. Mel Kiper not only wows people with his insider knowledge, but his hair also does the trick. I am not sure if it’s even real anymore. I think ESPN just CGIs his hair in place before every telecast. It’s the off season guys, so give it a rest for a while.

College basketball is entering its stretch run, and teams are gearing up for March Madness. Once again, there hasn’t been a clear-cut favorite in the regular season. Duke and North Carolina are good once again, and both have been up to number one in the country, but they have also lost to some questionable teams. If I had to pick an early favorite, I would look at Pittsburgh or Oklahoma. Pittsburgh has a dynamite player in Sam Young who can light it up on any given night, while Oklahoma has the powerful Blake Griffin. Griffin dominates the boards and scores some points while he’s at it. Griffin went down with a concussion in Oklahoma’s recent loss to Texas, so let’s hope he’s OK. My early dark horse is Kentucky because Jodi Meeks has the skill to take games over like nobody else in the country, and he could carry them deep in the March tourney. Keep your eyes open; bracket time is just around the corner.
Society told him to “Beat It.” “Billie Jean” would not claim to be his lover even if he begged, and frankly the only “Thriller” about his existence seems to be looking at his pathetic excuse for a face. That’s right, if you haven’t guessed by now, I’m not talking about the “Man in the Mirror,” I’m talking about the man that set out on an escapade to “Heal the World.”
The Heller Center and its purpose are relatively unknown to UCCS students. Some associate its presence with ghost stories and dares that have prompted some to wander onto its mysterious property late at night. The stucco and concrete block buildings on the Center’s property really have a rich history that members of the community, along with the University, are looking to preserve.
The power of ‘King James’
While watching Lebron James destroy the Milwaukee Bucks last week, I officially stopped being a Lebron James-hater. I have never liked his game; it always seemed sloppy and unnatural to me.
