Don’t fight the waves

Recently I read a column in the Wall Street Journal in which the writer noted that we are quite possibly in one of the most vulnerable times in U.S. history. With the growing economic crisis and the country already leaning toward a government takeover of any industry needing funds, we may find ourselves slipping into a purely socialistic society.

… or the content of their closets

Despite the historic nature of the recent presidential inauguration, plenty of groups and individuals are still finding things to complain about. Of course, one of the hottest topics on inauguration day revolved around the fashions chosen by the first family. Apparently Malia and Sasha Obama are good for the economy, the sisters’ outfits inspired so many people to buy the same items that the J. Crew Web site crashed and was down for about an hour and a half on inauguration day. However, First Lady Michelle Obama received some unexpected backlash regarding not what she was wearing, but whom.

6 years, $600B and 7.5M voters

Don’t tell me democracy can’t win. Don’t tell me it doesn’t work. And don’t say Iraq was a lost cause. Less than four years ago Iraq held its first real election in over 40 years, coming just two years after the U.S.-led invasion.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Scribe,   When I first read Mr. Green’s rant that ethnic and women’s based studies are obsolete, I had to giggle and was under the impression that it was a satirical piece. After reading the whole article, I realized Mr. Green was being serious.

You may just learn something

There is an odd complex in our society that suggests when a member of the human race disagrees with something another believes, he therefore must hate the individual holding the beliefs. Like what I wrote just now for instance. You may not have noticed anything odd about that first sentence, but in case you were one of those who want to throw a rock threw the Scribe window because of Joshua Green’s column last week, you probably noticed that I exclusively used masculine pronouns.

You’re not as bad as you thought

Some college students may have inebriated themselves, a few executives were probably just leaving the office, and perhaps some high school students were staying up late at their friends’ houses working on “homework.” And in other news, a couple submarines armed with nuclear warheads collided. Seriously.

CU System: color blind?

Anyone who has worked at The Scribe for any length of time has been privy to some sort of scandal, controversy or other general unpleasantness. Sometimes the latest Scribe scandal is something to be expected, other times it’s anything but. A few weeks ago, we ran a short story about what UCCS’ school colors are. Simple and uncontroversial, right? Surprisingly, we got several e-mails and comments correcting what was perceived to be a mistake.

Try on a different pair of glasses

Life is a struggle. In all of humankind’s existence, one thing nearly everyone will agree with is that it is a struggle, a constant fight against an opposing force. Some call it good and evil, others call it nature, others may even assess the situation as a struggle within one’s self, but few would say life is “easy” and without some amount of force to be applied to it.

My review of Muertehead

As I was watching a late night commercial a few wee hours ago, I was informed that I could take a particular drug that had few side effects. I was pleased to learn that that if my headaches wouldn’t go away, I could take a drug that had only a few, minor side effects.
