Blame it on the politics: A new approach is possible

We have all been to Cragmor Hall Room 201. It is the room where you rejoice over scholarships. It is the room where you cry tears of debt. It is financial aid.

Student life opportunities: The key to student retention

I don’t exactly remember when I first decided to attend UCCS. But I do know that it was the free t-shirt in the mail that did me in.

Letter to the Editor

Why was the second half of the article on the Vagina Monologues missing in your print edition last week?

Declare your love this year: Not on Facebook or a text message

Today my friend updated her Facebook status to say, “How am I supposed to get to know him if he doesn’t have a Facebook?”

A day in the life of...

For those of you who noticed, my title is no longer “Executive Editor.” While the previous me had decided to change it, I decided it made me sound too fancy; plus, I received multiple blank, confused stares when I introduced myself as such. While this is one little detail of my life that you may have noticed (or not), here are a few more details that encompass my favorite day of the week.

Higher ed cuts will slam the poor

Lawmakers in the state of Colorado have approached the proverbial cutting board to shore up looming budget deficits for the coming fiscal year. Stretched on that cutting board is the neck of higher education.

Moriah Gonzales

It is with the utmost distaste that I write this letter.  My name is Moriah Gonzales and I was the person interviewed for “The Day in the Life . . .” article in the Scribe printed on 2/2/10; I am employed as a peer counselor in the Office of Financial Aid/Student Employment here at UCCS.  I feel that this article is a piece of journalistic dishonesty.  The interview was given with the understanding that my story would be told.  Instead, I feel my interview was dramatically altered.  I gladly provided this interview and was saddened to see this abhorrent article depicting me as a frustrated, rude, and disrespectful employee of the University.

To the flyers protesting homosexuals not donating

Letter to the Editor

The fact that 700 students showed up to protest funding cuts might give great insight as to why universities across the board are raising tuition.  From the university standpoint, it makes clear sense as to why prices have been increasing - the demand far exceeds the capacity power.

Be proactive about your safety

Let me preface this editorial by saying that I do not condone or abhor guns. This is not an editorial that will teach readers how to safely use a gun, how to get a concealed carry permit or what to do with a gun in certain situations.

Welcome to the real world

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the nationwide unemployment rate was at 10.6 percent for January 2010. The Colorado unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, and for El Paso County it was 8 percent.

Higher education degree freeze

On March 3 around 700 students marched to the Denver Capitol Building to rally against higher education budget cuts.  A sign held by a student (featured on the front page) that day read, “I’m ditching class so my children have classes to ditch.” The students that marched to the Capitol were after more than just an excuse to ditch class; they were after hope for a brighter future.

My favorite amendment: Censorship must be stopped

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press, but a few people who have contacted us lately do not seem to understand that concept. Let’s break it down.

Marijuana isn’t going anywhere, so let’s talk about it

If you flip through our pages this week, you’ll notice they are rather inundated with the topic of weed. Almost beyond any sane or reasonable level of inundation for such a touchy topic.

Letter to the Editor

I have a few thoughts in response to Tim Canon’s recent editorial on a paperless Scribe.

What to expect from the students who represent you

This year’s election has been a little different from previous elections. We have yet to see that many flyers blocking the sunlight in windows, there are no signs posted in the grass currently  and there are fewer people running. But for those who are running, we want to make them aware of one thing: You represent the students.

Truths of “The argument that shouldn’t be”

Letter to the Editor

I felt compelled to respond to Stephen Farrell’s recent column about the FDA’s discrimination against homosexuals as potential blood donors.

About Page 6

In this issue of The Scribe, there is a full-page color paid advertisement apologizing on page 6. The apology is to the family, friends, coaches and teammates of David Mueller and the community as a whole, and we felt that, in the interest of student drunk-driving awareness, we should call your attention to it.

Drastically unwise: Why a paperless Scribe is a bad idea

There’s been some commotion lately coming from one of Geography Professor Carole Huber’s classes about The Scribe going paperless. When we first heard of this, we laughed: It’s a bad idea and, believe it or not, it is a bad sustainability practice as well.

Been there, done that: It’s been a pleasure UCCS

I have 450 items in my Scribe folder on my computer, not counting my campus drive.
